5 Tips To Help You Stay Well This Winter, a paid collaboration with BioCare
“Cold weather? It’s snow problem.” — Unknown
The clocks have gone back, the days feel short and leaving the house without a hat, scarf and gloves is a risky decision – and its only November! Soon most of us will be going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark. Love it or hate it, winter is coming (pun intended).
This time last year, I had just started teaching yoga full time and was overworked and consistently tired. I felt under the weather for most of the festive season. I used most of my days off to sleep; and didn’t get to do as many dog walks or hot chocolate dates with friends as I would have liked. We can make the most of winter when we are feeling our best and this year I’m pulling out all the stops to stay well this winter.
The mention of self-care can get lots of eye rolls but it is more than running a bath after a stressful day and lighting a candle; it is taking foundational steps to make sure you look after your mental, physical and emotional self.
Since stopping drinking I’ve learned to take better care of myself.
And that I can do things to improve my chances of staying well; mentally, physically and emotionally. I can’t control whether or not I get a cold, but I can try to keep my immune system functioning well and not hibernate at home with a bar of chocolate every night.
I’ve put a plan in place to stay well this winter: mind, body and spirit – and hopefully this will help me feeling my best and actually enjoying the cold season (rather than grumbling my way through it!)
5 Tips To Help You Stay Well This Winter:
Get Enough Sleep
I find when the nights get darker, it is quite easy to go to bed early … for a little while. But then all the good TV shows are on, friends are inviting me for catch up dinners or I work late and quite quickly I am back into bad habits of going to bed too late and still needing to get up early. Most adults need about 8 hours of good quality sleep a night.
We all know that getting enough sleep is important; but I didn’t know just how important until recently. As stated on the NHS website, lack of sleep can weaken your immune system, lead to weight gain and severely impact your mental health. Getting enough sleep is key to helping you stay well this winter.
Ok so I know staying warm may seem like obvious advice for helping you stay well and feeling good this winter – but I have been known to choose an outfit based on style rather than warmth even when it is freezing outside. Wearing several layers, rather than one chunky cardigan can help you stay warm (as well as still looking good).
Keeping your house at 18 degrees or above is advised; and checking in on vulnerable neighbours or relatives to make sure they are warm enough will help them stay well this winter too.
Eat Well and Support Your Nutrition
Eating at least one warm meal a day during the winter months can help you to stay warm and well. Comfort food is allowed of course; but keeping up eating 5 or more vegetables a day to ensure you get a good variety of vitamins and minerals contributes to good health.
Biocare’s Head of Clinical Nutrition, Chris Newbold advises that “our diets today do not always contain the sufficient levels of the required key vitamins and minerals we need to maintain a strong and healthy immune system … so when we are feeling under the weather, specially formulated supplements can help get you back back on your feet as soon as possible. Biocare’s Immune Intensive provides high potency immune support with Vitamins A, C, D, Zinc, plus Beta Glucans to support a healthy immune system. I have it stocked in my cupboard for when my immune system needs an extra boost.
Protect Your Gut
Since reading Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ by Giulia Enders, I have been fascinated about the impact our gut can have on our physical and emotional health. Our gut can also contribute to the functioning of a healthy immune system. Approximately 100 trillion bacteria (woah!) can be found in our gut, which can play an important role in both protecting the body from dangerous strains and helping us to digest food properly. Taking a good probiotic can help support the gut to support our overall health. Everyday BioAcidophilus by BioCare contains 10 billion of the clinically-researched LAB4 bacteria combination per capsule and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Who likes to stay inside the moment the temperature drops below 10 degrees? My hand shot straight up. I do not like the cold and I am a sun worshiper who loves warm weather.
As tempting as it is to stay at home and hibernate all winter; doing exercise supports our mental and physical health! Endorphins make us feel good. Pick an exercise you enjoy; whether it’s walking, Zumba, yoga or the gym and try to stick with it all winter.
What are you doing to stay well this winter? Any fun plans coming up?
